This test measures the level of Phosphorus, also known as Inorganic Phosphate, in the blood. Phosphorus is a mineral which is important to energy production, bone growth and muscle and nerve function. The majority of phosphorus in the body combines with calcium to form bones and teeth.
Phosphorus also plays a key role in maintaining the body's acid-base balance. Abnormal levels of phosphorus may be indicative of kidney damage, malnutrition, malabsorption, and high or low calcium levels.
Phosphorus testing is typically ordered when someone has symptoms of kidney disease, gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes or an acid-base imbalance. It may be ordered along with a
Calcium Blood Test when someone has symptoms such as muscle weakness, cramping, fatigue or bone problems which may indicate abnormal calcium levels.
A Phosphorus test is also included in the Renal Function Panel.
