Chlamydia Urine Test

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common cause of curable bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide. It manifests primarily as urethritis in males and endocervicitis in females. Untreated chlamydial infection in man can cause epididymitis and proctitis. Though most women with Chlamydia infection are asymptomatic or have minimal symptoms, some develop salpingitis, endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy and tubal factor infertility. It is associated with an increased risk for the transmission or acquisition of HIV and is also attributed to be a risk factor for the development of cervical carcinoma. 

Chlamydia is one of the most frequently reported STD’s in the United States with approximately 2.8 million cases annually. Chlamydia is often known as the “silent disease” because it frequently displays no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, the most common are abnormal discharge, burning during urination, sores, or a rash around the genital area.

Chlamydia testing is recommended for anyone who is sexually active or engages in high risk behavior regardless of whether they are currently experiencing symptoms. Pregnant women are encouraged to receive a Chlamydia test due to the risk of transmitting the infection during birth. Untreated Chlamydia infections may result in permanent damage to the reproductive system and an increased susceptibility to HIV.

Collection instructions
The patient should not have urinated for at least one hour prior to specimen collection. Direct patient to provide a first-catch urine (approximately 20 to 30 mL of the initial urine stream) into a urine collection cup free of any preservatives. Collection of larger volumes of urine may result in specimen dilution that may reduce test sensitivity; lesser volumes may not adequately rinse organisms into the specimen. Female patients should not cleanse the labial area prior to providing the specimen. Add urine to the Aptima® Combo 2 urine collection device. The final volume must be between the two black lines on the device (about 2 mL).
